Dr. Ben Chan is Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, in the Division of Global Health and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. His current interests focus on leadership and strategy for quality improvement in health care organizations.
Dr. Chan was the inaugural CEO of the Health Quality Councils of Saskatchewan and Ontario from 2003 to 2012. In both organizations, Dr. Chan spearheaded efforts to expand public reporting of quality and support quality improvement campaigns in all health sectors to improve chronic disease management, reduce wait times and prevent adverse events. In 2006, Dr. Chan was named Canada’s Outstanding Young Health Executive.
Dr. Chan is a well-respected academic with over 80 publications and has consulted widely to international governments and organizations such as the World Bank. A popular public speaker, Dr. Chan has had over 300 speaking engagements spanning 14 countries. He is also a practicing primary care physician and has worked in 80 rural communities and 8 provinces and territories across Canada. Dr. Chan holds a BSc and MD (Toronto), Master of Public Health (Harvard) and Master of Public Affairs (Princeton).
