Delirium is an acute confusional state characterized by fluctuating mental status, inattention and either altered level of consciousness or disorganized thinking. It is common in hospitalized elderly patients and typically follows an acute event such as surgery, severe infection or admission to the intensive care unit. Risk factors for delirium include patient factors (e.g. age) and iatrogenic factors (e.g. physical restraints, medications). Delirium treatment involves identifying and correcting the underlying medical and environmental causes, and prescribing medications such as antipsychotics. Antipsychotics, however, may have significant side effects, particularly in the elderly, including the potential to worsen delirium and increased risk of sudden death.
Join Dr. Lisa Burry, a Clinical Scientist and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto, as she discusses the Cochrane Collaboration to determine the efficacy and safety of antipsychotics for the treatment of delirium in hospitalized, elderly patients. Dr. Burry is Chair of the Emergency and Trauma Medicine Editorial Board, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, board member of Intensive Care Medicine journal, and a clinical preceptor to numerous BSc, MSc, Doctor of Pharmacy students and pharmacy residents. Her research interests relate to patient and drug safety – in particular sedation, neuromuscular blockade, delirium and pain.
