(Winnipeg, MB) EvidenceNetwork.ca is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Shannon Sampert, Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Winnipeg as the incoming Director and Editor in Chief of EvidenceNetwork.ca, effective April 1, 2017. Dr. Sampert has most recently worked as the Perspectives and Politics Editor at the Winnipeg Free Press for the last two and a half years.
EvidenceNetwork.ca creates non-partisan and evidence-based media content on health policy for publication in a wide range of mainstream media sources. It also links journalists with health policy experts to provide access to credible, evidence-based information. Since 2011, EvidenceNetwork.ca has published more than 3500 original media articles in every major newspaper across the country as well in a wide range of regional and niche media outlets in English and French.
Dr. Sampert has 15-years of media experience along with a strong research portfolio in media and public policy. “I am delighted to take over the position as Director and Editor in Chief,” says Dr. Sampert. “This is an opportunity for the sharing of evidence-based research that goes beyond journals and conferences and allows the public to read what researchers are talking about. It really is research in action,” says Sampert.
Dr. Sampert will work with Kathleen O’Grady, who will continue as Managing Editor of EvidenceNetwork.ca. Former Director and Editor in Chief, Dr. Noralou Roos, Professor at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba steps down from the position after seven years founding and leading the project.
“Working with academics and journalists and editors across the country has been a great experience,” says Dr. Roos. “I’m delighted that Shannon will continue to help academics communicate their research evidence to those that matter: the public and policymakers.”
EvidenceNetwork.ca is also pleased to announce support from the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI), which has agreed to a major funding commitment for the next fiscal year (2017-2018). CFHI is supporting EvidenceNetwork.ca financially and in an advisory function, but the network will continue to remain independent.
Evidence Network has also received funding from a wide range of other groups, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the CIHR’s Institute for Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR), their Institute for Public and Population Health (IPPH), Research Manitoba, University of Manitoba Community Health Sciences/Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, the Canadian Frailty Network and the George and Fay Yee Centre for Healthcare Innovation.
