China lets Trump pass the deadline

China lets Trump pass the deadline

By Dr. Kyle Muller

China has not withdrawn his counter-duties on US goods. This goes into the next round: In the USA, additional duties of 104 percent apply to Chinese imports. How will China react to it?

The state and party leadership in Beijing did not respond to Trump’s ultimatum and maintained the counter-tariffs of 34 percent to US goods. This means that the escalation spiral remains in the trade dispute between the USA and China.

Since shortly after midnight Washington, Chinese goods that are delivered to the United States have applied a total of 104 percent additional tariffs from the current term of office of US President Donald Trump. They come to existing tariffs on top.

China’s countermeasures are expected

It can be assumed that China will impose further tariffs and trade restrictions against US products and US companies in the coming days. There is also speculation about exposing the cooperation in the curve of the fentanyl crisis in the USA.

In China’s state media it was said in the evening that the United States was cursed by its own madness. The newspaper China Daily writes that China’s countermeasures are not a confrontation, but a necessary answer to the despotic trade policy in the United States.

China is combative

Foreign Office and Ministry of Commerce in Beijing had sharply convicted Trump’s procedure yesterday. A foreign office spokesman said that they would fight with the United States in the customs and trade wars to the end.

In the course of the customs dispute, the People’s Republic also sells as a guardian of fairness in international trade. After a phone call between Premier Li Qiang and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, it was said in a message that China and the EU are committed to free, value-based world trade. The communication of the European Union reads a little differently. Accordingly, Leyen China asked to work on a negotiating solution with Trump.

Which tariffs have been in force since today

Since midnight American times (6:01 a.m. CEST), special tariffs have applied to numerous countries. On Saturday, flat -rate base tariffs of ten percent had already come into force on imports from all countries. Now there are even higher punitive tariffs for a dozen states that, according to Trump, achieve trade surpluses with the United States. Including the European Union: 20 percent of additional surcharges apply to all imports from the EU. America’s arch-rivals are even harder: Additional duties of 34 percent should originally apply to US imports from China. After China reacted with 34 percent counter-tariffs, Trump increased the special tariffs for Chinese products to a total of 104 percent. However, economists doubt the calculation basis for the many US tariffs and criticize that they are based on sometimes incorrect assumptions.
