Defeating in the US customs dispute with Mexico

By Dr. Kyle Muller

US President Trump determined the 1st August as a key date for new tariffs. With some states, the USA found compromises – now also with Mexico. All others should find out in the next few hours how things will go.

Additional US criminal offenses for Mexico are initially off the table: the states have agreed to extend their previous customs regulation. He wrote to Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, wrote US President Donald Trump on his Truth Social platform. In the next 90 days, the two countries will continue to negotiate a final agreement. In the meantime, Mexico will pay the tariffs in the amount of 25 percent on cars and certain other goods as well as taxes of 50 percent on steel, aluminum and copper, Trump said.

Sheinbaum was satisfied after the phone call. The 1,5 percent of 30 percent on goods from Mexico, which had been announced by August 1, were initially averted, she wrote on X. Trump had previously threatened to a letter to the southern neighboring country. “We had a very good conversation with US President Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum wrote now. Mexico won 90 days to achieve long -term communication with the United States. However, new customs rules of the United States should apply to many countries from Friday.

15 percent on products from the EU

For products from the European Union, according to a fundamental agreement, the flat rate of 15 percent is due for imports to the USA. “From August 1st, the United States will apply this maximum customs rate to the majority of EU exports,” as can be seen from an EU document.

US President Donald Trump had threatened tariffs on the import of products from numerous countries on August 1st. Then negotiations followed with many countries – Trump then adapted the customs claims and went down. In the case of the EU, 30 percent would have been due after its earlier customs threat.

Agree with South Korea also

According to Trump, there was also an agreement with South Korea. If he had previously threatened to raise tariffs in the amount of 25 percent on the import of products from the country from August 1, he now said about Truth Social that they had been agreed to 15 percent. According to his Minister of Commerce Howard Lutnick, this duty will also apply to auto imports. America is not burdened with tariffs, Trump wrote.

South Korea will also provide the United States $ 350 billion for investments through which he decides. In addition, the state of liquid gas (LNG) or other energy products worth $ 100 billion will buy and accept American products such as cars and agricultural products. South Korea belongs to the G20 group, which in addition to the European and the African Union 19 of the strongest economies from all regions of the world.

Height tariffs for Brazil

However, no agreement was reached with Brazil. In response to criminal prosecution against Brazil’s ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, the United States wants to impose high tariffs from the South American country. As of next Wednesday, 40 percent of Brazilian products are to be set up in addition to existing tariffs, according to a corresponding decree.

Another US rule meets small goods imports from all over the world. According to Trump’s decree, she comes into force on August 29. He had already abolished the duty freely for goods imports with a value of less than $ 800 from China – now this should also apply to deliveries from the rest of the world. Customs of $ 80 to 200 should be due per article. Especially direct orders of very favorable products from foreign providers are likely to become unattractive for many Americans. The exception to deliveries from China is currently being challenged in court.

New resentment towards Canada

There are further unresolved questions with a view to Canada. Its planned recognition of Palestine as an independent state interprets Trump as a burden on an agreement in the customs dispute with the northern neighboring country. “Wow! (…) It will make it very difficult for us to conclude a trade agreement with them,” the Republican wrote on Truth Social. The United States is by far the most important trading partner for Canada. Trump had repeatedly imposed new tariffs against the country or threatened it since he took office. He had announced trade talks for the time being at the end of June.

Talks also failed with India about a possible trade agreement. As a result, tariffs of 25 percent should be incurred for imports from the country from Friday, as Trump announced. In this context, he again criticized the “strictest and most annoying” trade barriers with India.

Other states, on the other hand, also have to expect significantly higher tariffs. These include South Africa (30 percent), Laos and Myanmar (40 percent each). With China there is also no agreement, but both sides signaled the will for continued negotiations this week.

According to the White House, countries without trade agreements with the United States, which would not have heard anything else, are to be informed about the future trade conditions in the course of Thursday. “The trading team worked around the clock to get in touch with as many countries as possible,” said Karoline Leavitt’s spokeswoman for the White House. At the latest until midnight (US east coast period; 6 a.m. CEST on Friday), everyone would be informed by letter or by decree.
