Denis Daneman was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, completed medical school at the University of the Witwatersrand, paediatric residency at The Hospital for Sick Children/University of Toronto, and fellowship in paediatric endocrinology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh/University of Pittsburgh. Since 1981 he has been on faculty at UofT and The Hospital for Sick Children, from 1992-2006, Division head of Endocrinology and from 2006, Chair/Chief of the Department of Paediatrics. Major research interest has been in the understanding of the course of diabetes in childhood and how this impacts on early complications. More recently increasing interest in the social aspects of paediatrics has developed and is being pursued.
