EU exposes counter-duties on US goods for 90 days

US President Trump wants a 90-day break in the global customs dispute. Now the EU Commission is following. Planned counter-tariffs on US products will not come at first, as Commission chief from Leyen announced. Now you should negotiate.

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has announced that European counter-duties will not come into force on US goods for the time being. This applies for 90 days. During this time, the Trump administration is to be negotiated. “If the negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will come into force,” she said.

“We want to give negotiations a chance,” said von der Leyen the procedure in Brussels. However, this is not a complete all -clear in the trade dispute: “Preparations for further countermeasures continue,” emphasized von der Leyen. “All options remain on the table”.

Among other things, the Commission had proposed the US government to abolish all tariffs to certain industrial goods and cars. However, US President Donald Trump had recently dismissed the offer.

New customs package only decided the day before

It was only on Wednesday that the EU countries agreed on a list of goods from the United States, which are to be occupied by tariffs between ten and 25 percent. These tariffs of 20.9 billion euros should gradually come into force from April 15.

The EU initially reacted to Trump’s tariffs to steel and aluminum products that have been in force since mid-March. A European response to the now paused general higher US tariffs was still paused.

Among other things, several EU countries had spoken in preparing a procedure against US digital companies.

Trump stays hard against Beijing

Trump had partially suspended his tariffs imposed last week against a number of states for 90 days. Only the tariffs imposed against China were raised to 125 percent. Beijing had previously responded to imports from the USA with counter -tariffs of 84 percent.
