Federal government warns of “trade war” with the USA

Shallus prices worldwide are clearly giving up and governments are struggling for the right response to the announced tariffs of the United States. The federal government still sees a need for coordination in the EU and also advises itself with CDU boss Merz.

In view of the US customs policy, the federal government sees the risk of a larger trade conflict. The recent course slumps in the stock exchanges are a “wake -up call” that this way “would only know losers in the end,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. “The goal should be to further reduce trade barriers,” said the spokesman.

When answering the announced tariffs, there is still “a need for coordination” among governments in Europe, said Hebestreit. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), who is still in office, have discussions. These would also take place in close coordination with representatives of the possible future government coalition under CDU boss Friedrich Merz.

Habeck also warns of overview

One should not react emotionally now, but must understand the effects of the US tariffs. It is also important to protect domestic companies from the negative consequences. Germany and Europe should therefore act “wise” and “clearly” to prevent a “trade war”. The Federal Government was always “ready to talk” on this issue and remains.

The executive Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck also warned of overhanged reactions at an EU meeting with the USA, but at the same time spoke out for the preparation of extensive countermeasures.
It is now important that Europe cannot be split, emphasized Habeck. So individual countries should not try to negotiate their own advantages, then that will go wrong.

Crash on the stock markets continues

Financial markets worldwide also reacted violently to the customs announcements of the US President on Monday. The German leading index Dax temporarily dropped by ten percent, the Asian trading places sometimes came under even more pressure. This development is also emerging from the US markets.

According to the US government, more than 50 states are said to have admitted customs negotiations with Washington. “They are burning to make a deal,” said US President Donald Trump. Under certain conditions, he was ready to talk about a loosening of the new tariffs on imports to the USA. The US President demands that other countries reduce their trade deficits with the United States. However, his calculations of these deficits are incomplete and sometimes misleading.
