Dr. Richard Stanwick is currently the Chief Medical Health Officer for the Vancouver Island Health Authority, formerly the Capital Health Region, in Victoria, BC. He is responsible for overseeing a variety of critical public health programs as well as engaging in advocacy and seeking general improvements in the health of the public.
Dr. Stanwick completed his medical school training and received his Fellowship in Pediatrics after training at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital. Dr. Stanwick has been a Full Professor of Pediatrics and Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Acting Provincial Epidemiologist for the Province of Manitoba, and Medical Officer of Health for the City of Winnipeg.
Dr. Stanwick’s role in addressing the health risks of tobacco and exposure to second-hand smoke has resulted in ground-breaking successes by providing smoke-free environments for workers and the public. Dr. Stanwick has been central to many pediatric injury prevention initiatives ranging from flammable children’s sleepwear to booster seat legislation. He was the 2007 recipient of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s Leadership Award in Heart Healthy Policy. Dr. Stanwick has been awarded numerous other recognitions including Life Membership in both the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Canadian Public Health Association for his contributions to the health of Canadians.
Dr. Stanwick has presented at local, national and international meetings on subjects pertaining to public health and in particular tobacco and injury control. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, book chapters and booklets.
He is a Past President of the Canadian Paediatric Society.
