Is your smartphone flooded with notifications? Android 15 has a function that brakes the avalanche of communications by limiting sounds, vibrations and pop-ups.
Between messages, e-mails, app updates and groups on WhatsApp, our smartphone has become a tireless dispenser of notifications, which if on the one hand keep us updated, on the other they risk generating a constant mental overload. But with Android 15 a useful new and (so far) little known To solve the problem: it’s called Notification Cooldown And it is a function that “cools” the avalanche of communications received in a short time, limiting sounds, vibrations and pop-ups.
Designed by Google to improve concentration and reduce digital stress, it is available from March 2025 on Pixel phones, but it could soon arrive on other Android devices. The principle is simple: if you receive too many notes in rapid sequence, the phone stops insist and begins to “whisper”.
Silent mode. The operation is automatic but configurable. Just open the phone settings, go to “notifications” and then on “Cooling notifications“, activating the switch. From that moment, if you receive a burst of notices (typical in very active groups), Only the first will produce a sound or vibrationwhile the following ones will still be received and visible in the bar at the top, but without interrupting what is being done more: a good balance between presence and silence. The system does not warn when it comes into action, a gradual approach that Avoid both the complete blackout and the continuous bombingduring which you call, alarms, priority messages and emergency alerts always remain activeso as to never lose something really important.
Less stress. If mental health passes (also) from the smartphone, this small tool can make a big difference. Disable all notifications is not always the best solution, especially if you want to receive updates from friends or colleagues. With the cooldownon the other hand, an effect similar to that of a smart filter: The first alerts attract attention, the subsequent ones pass in the background until they are ready to read them.
Google’s data suggest that the majority of those who try this option, then leave it active by default, in particular for the most “tattered” groups, in which a few minutes are enough to accumulate dozens of messages. In short, it is a middle ground between silent ways and hyperconnectionideal for those looking for concentration without isolation.
Customization. Cooling is just one of the many options available on Android 15 to manage notifications in a targeted way.
In the settings you can access the “App Notifications” section e decide which can disturb and to what extent: For example, only direct messages on selected applications can be left active and block everything else. Other advanced functions are found in the “Mode” section, which allows you to create personalized profiles based on times, places or activities, selecting “authorized” contacts and apps.
Finally, it is good to keep in mind that many apps, such as WhatsApp, also offer themselves options to silence specific conversations for a certain time period (for example up to eight hours, a week or forever), even if, probably, opt for the “cooldown” presents itself as an easier and more effective option.
