From August 1, US President Trump plans to raise additional tariffs of 30 percent on goods from the European Union and Mexico. This emerges from letter that Trump published on his Truth Social platform.
In the trade conflict with the European Union, US President Donald Trump announced tariffs of 30 percent on goods from the EU. The US trade deficit towards the EU is a threat to national security, Trump wrote in a letter that he published on his social media platform Truth Social. The regulation should take place from August 1st.
“We have discussed our trade relationships with the European Union for years and have come to the conclusion that we have to move away from these long -term, large and persistent trade deficits that have arisen from their tariff and non -tariff measures and trade barriers,” said Trump. “Unfortunately, our relationship was far from being based on mutuality.”
USA for Germany most important trading partners
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ruled promptly. She warned the US government that 30 percent tariffs on EU exports would sensitively disrupt transatlantic supply chains. The EU has always sought a negotiating solution with the USA, explains von der Leyen. It was ready to continue working on an agreement until August 1st. If this does not succeed, the EU will take all the necessary steps to protect your interests, including countermeasures. Brussels has already prepared against tariffs for US products worth around 21 billion euros, but these are exposed to the period of negotiations. A first list includes US products such as jeans and motorcycles.
The Italian government was confident that a fair agreement can still be achieved in the customs dispute. It was crucial to concentrate on negotiations, said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Prime Minister. Rome fully support the efforts of the EU Commission, which would be intensified in the coming days.
The Federal Association of German Industry (BDI) described Trump’s measure as an alarm signal for industry on both sides of the Atlantic. “A trade conflict between two so tightly intertwined economic areas as the EU and the USA harms economic relaxation, innovative strength and ultimately also trust in international cooperation,” said Wolfgang Niedermark, member of the BDI main management. “The few weeks until the tariffs come into force on August 1st must be used for negotiations at eye level.” The United States is the most important trading partner for Germany.
Customs also meet many other countries
In another letter, Trump threatened the neighboring country Mexico with the same customs set. In it he admitted to the Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum that the country was helpful in the containment of the influx of migrants without papers and the smuggling of Fentanyl to the United States. Mexico still did too little, he added.
In the past few days, the US President had announced a number of new tariffs against certain countries, most recently for imports from Canada and Brazil.
With his customs policy, the Republican wants to correct alleged trade weights and achieve that more is produced in the United States. The tariffs already bring the US government to billions in billions. According to Friday, data from the US Ministry of Finance will exceed $ 100 billion in the current budget year to June.
