US President Trump once again threatened the EU with tariffs. According to his latest statements, 25 percent should be in the cabinet. At the same time, he caused confusion with statements about the tariffs for Mexico and Canada.
In his first cabinet meeting, US President Donald Trump renewed his customs threat to goods from the European Union – and promised a height of 25 percent. A decision was made that would soon be announced, he explained to the demand from a journalist.
“It will be 25 percent, generally spoken, for cars and all other things,” said Trump. He accused the Europeans again to take advantage of the United States. The EU was founded “to pull the United States over the table”. This is “the purpose” of the EU.
EU Commissioner announces reaction
A prompt reaction followed from the EU: The EU Commission Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Vice-Presentation Vice-Presentation Vice-Presentation to X: “Europe will react, immediately and determined.” He also wrote that barriers for fair trade were unjustified, especially between partners and damaged consumers in the USA and the EU.
Trump had recently signed an arrangement that tariffs are to be raised everywhere where the United States is currently less demanding than its trading partners. It doesn’t matter whether it is strategic competitors such as China or allies such as the European Union, according to the White House. The tariffs are not yet in force.
Trump mentions a new date for tariffs for Mexico and Canada
With regard to the announced tariffs for Mexico and Canada, the US President surprised with a new appointment: According to his latest statement at the cabinet meeting, the 25 percent imports should apply from April 2. “I wanted to do it on April 1,” said the Republican. “But I’m a little superstitious, I made it on April 2.”
The date caused confusion: at the beginning of February, shortly before the planned entry into force of punitive tariffs, he accepted 25 percent concessions of neighboring countries and postponed the trade restrictions by 30 days. This period would have meant that the tariffs take effect in early March.
Negotiations between Mexico and the USA continue
The new date indicates another postponement. When asked by a journalist, Trump did not clearly confirm this. According to the Reuters news agency, a representative of the US government said that “at the moment” continued the original date. This is subject to an examination as to whether the two neighboring countries had taken sufficient measures against illegal migration and drug trafficking.
According to the Reuters news agency, Mexico’s deputy foreign trade minister Luis Rosendo stated that Mexico is working with the United States to reach an agreement on tariffs before the deadline. After a meeting in Washington with the team of the US trade officer Jamieson Greer, he said Reuters that the officials had discussed the upcoming “review of the USMCA trade spact, concerns about steel and aluminum as well as China and other topics”. The United States paid tribute to the country’s work to control migration and fentanyl trade.
