In the middle of the trade conflict between the USA and China, the US post will initially no longer let parcels from China and Hong Kong into the country. According to experts, USPS must first adapt to new customs rules for packages with low value.
The post in the United States does not want to “temporarily” accept parcels from China. The acceptance of packages from China and Hong Kong will be suspended until further notice, said the US Postal Service (USPS). However, the change would have no effect on the mail order from China and Hong Kong.
So far, Chinese online retailers have been able to deliver under $ 800 to the United States under $ 800. With Donald Trump’s new tariffs, this fell away: since yesterday a decree of the president has been in force to raise customs surcharges of ten percent on imports from China – and at the same time abolish the customs exemption to packages with low value.
USPS will take time to adjust to the new customs regulations and to decide on the promotion of the packages again, said the analyst Chelsey Tam. This is a major challenge – because in the past there are around four million packages a day below the rules for one duty -free dispatch to the USA.
Customs exemption on parcels with low value canceled
With this so-called de-minimis control, Chinese online retailers such as Temu and Shein were able to deliver articles to the USA. Now these packages would also have to go through customs. However, international logisticians explained that they continued to transport packages from the People’s Republic to the United States. Fedex announced, for example, the group continued. The online retailer Amazon did not want to comment.
Analysts assume that Temu and Shein’s programs will become more expensive by the US government’s procedure. However, it is not to be expected that this would dramatically press the number of programs. The Chinese online retailers are expected to be cheaper than US trading chains under the new rules.
Half of the Dinimis programs from China
According to estimates by the US customs and border protection authority, American buyers and companies imported shipments from all over the world worth around $ 48 billion in the first nine months of last year. Almost half de deinimis programs come from China, as the China committee of the US Congress reported in June 2023.
In response to the customs duties ordered by US President Donald Trump on imports from China, Beijing reacts with counter -tariffs – especially to fossil fuels. As the Ministry of Finance announced in Beijing, additional tariffs of 15 percent are to be charged on coal and liquefied natural gas from the USA. An additional custom of ten percent should apply to oil and agricultural machines. The tariffs should therefore come into force on February 10th.
