The conservatives are so called because, originally, they were charity institutions where they “kept” in the sense of preserving and treating orphaned, poor or abandoned children, giving education and training, often in the musical field by teaching them to play instruments, to sing and read the music. The term derives from the verb “preserving”, which in this context means maintaining, guarding, protecting also referring to the musical tradition.

Beneficial institutions. The first conservatives were born in Italy, in the 16th and 17th centuries in Naples, Venice and Palermo. Over time, the term “conservatory” has maintained its original meaning, but has specialized to indicate the music schools that form professionals and music enthusiasts.
