Surveillance of influence: the United States have already been made aside

By Dr. Kyle Muller

In advance on the legal time of the divorce from the WHO, the USA have already stopped communicating the data on the progress of the seasonal influence to the agency.

A few weeks after the announced release of the United States from the WHO, and long before the year necessary to perform this separation, the US have already ceased to share epidemiological data on seasonal influence with the World Health Organization. The initiative, which takes place in the middle of one of the worst flu seasons of recent years, risks undermining the effectiveness of the next vaccines against the fluand to have repercussions on public health in the USA and in the rest of the world.

Sentinelle network. The Global surveillance system and response to flu (Gisrs) was activated by WHO in 1952 to monitor the frequent changes of flu viruses and prepare an adequate response with effective vaccines against prevalent strains. This collaborative effort, which involves 151 national workshops for the collection of samples distributed in 127 countries And 7 centers that collaborate with the WHO (in the United States, China, Russia, Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia) monitors the evolution of the influence in real time, but has contributed, over the years, to keep an eye on other pandemic threats, such as the Sars-Cov-2.

Twice a year, the WHO INDICE MEETING INDEX FOR THE STUDY OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE NEXT INFLUMENT VACCINI in northern and southern hemispheres, on the basis of how the flu season went in the other half of the globe.

Seasonal influence

Dead track. Two of these centers that work in close collaboration with the WHO are found in the United States, and have stopped responding to communications with the organization on January 24: few Giomi after Trump’s decision to collect the country he guides from any scientific collaboration of international importance. The absence of dialogue was Confirmed by Maria Van KerkhoveUS epidemiologist and Director Epidemic & Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention of WHO.

We all lose ourselves. The United States therefore stopped sharing their data on the seasonal influence with the WHO and probably they will not take part in the next meeting set to determine the composition of the flu vaccines for the season that will come, set for Friday 28 February 2025. It is a scientific loss of enormous proportionsgiven that the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are the main global resource for the control of the pandemics and which here work some of the most experienced epidemiologists in the world. Even if the WHO is working to fill this hole of information from a territory extended like the USA, it is very likely that the precision of the next influential anti-influence vaccines will be affected.

Penalized voters. The US citizens will first of us, since the information on how the virus in their country changes and on the prevailing strains will not be shared.

All this, in the middle of a flu season that hit 29 million people in the USA and which caused about 16,000 deaths – perhaps due to a non -perfect match between circulating strains and available vaccine, or of poor vaccination coverage between children and teenagersstops at 46% of the total vaccinable population (last year was 51%).
