By Dr. Kyle Muller

This is a question & answer written by the 3C (traditional) class of the Arturo Tosi Scientific High School of Busto Arsizio for Evidence Network Academy.

The “light pillar” or light pillar is an optical atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when the water vapor, condensing to a temperature of less than 0 ° Celsius, shape of the hexagonal ice micro-cristals which, like small mirrors, reflect light sources on a vertical level. These are not only formed in the surface part of the air, but also at high altitude where they reflect the sunlight. The final result of the refraction of light is a bright and colorful column whose intensity varies according to the size and quantity of crystals.

Where to see the show. To attend this event it is necessary that the place concerned has a high rate of humidity, that there is total absence of wind and that there are sufficiently intense light sources of light accompanied by a peaceful sky, at night or at sunset, given that the contrast between light and dark is very evident. To better enjoy this experience away from urban smog, North countries such as Norway and Iceland are optimal.
