Puebla is one of the states of Mexico located in the center-east of the country and its capital is Puebla de Zaragoza. The State has a territorial area of โโ34,290 km2which represents 1.7% of the national territory. It is characterized by having a great geomorphological heterogeneity, according to the altitude of the relief, soils and climates are differentiated. Thanks to this diversity of conditions, Puebla is a state rich in minerals, oil, soils, water, ecosystems and biodiversity. If you are interested in knowing more about Natural Resources from Puebla We invite you to continue reading this Ecology Verde.
Minerals
In the state of Puebla we can find different mining regions according to lithology and type of deposit. Although it is not one of the states with the main mineral deposits, its strategic geographical position has returned it A mining state.
The exploitation of mines began throughout 1800 with the extraction of metal minerals, including:
- Gold
- Copper
- Zinc
- Silver
- Lead
Although in the last 50 years this activity has been only sporadic. From 1950 to the present, in regards to mining, Puebla is a important producer of non -metallic mineralssuch as perlita, calcite, marble, plaster, feldspar, talc and bentonite.
Until 2016, 753 mines concessions have been registered, covering 80 mineral treatments plants and occupying 28.5% of the territory of the State of Puebla. As for the economic issue, in 2019 the State contributed to the National Total Income Value at 0.69% Thanks to mining exploitation.
We tell you how mineral extraction affects the environment, here.
Fuels
Another of Puebla’s natural resources has to do with fuels. Puebla occupies The 21st place in oil production in Mexico. By 2014, 137,000 wells were developed for the production of gas, oil and condensate. And during 2018 2,000 jobs have been generated in oil extractions.
Of the total of the poblano territory, 3% are intended for oil activity. But of that portion, more than half is destined to the exploration of fuel, 24% to the extraction itself of hydrocarbons and the remaining 22% are used for the reception of the raw materials product of the activity.
Is oil a renewable resource? Discover the answer in the following Ecology Verde.
Soils
The diversity of ecological conditions in the state of Puebla due to climatic factorsof mother material, reliefs and biologicalthey have generated a heterogeneity of soil types, reaching the total of 21 different units. The most abundant soils are the Phaeoezems, Regosoles, Leptosoles and Andosoles.
Puebla presents a Volcanic soil predominance And despite the fact that fertility is on average at low, 45.17% of the territory is dedicated to agricultural activities, which has led to the overexploitation of soils.
Some of the crops obtained are:
- Corn.
- Coffee.
- Avocados
- Sugarcane.
- Beans.
- Potato.
- Alfalfa.
- Fruits: grapes, lemons, oranges, apples and mangoes.
Soils also allow to develop livestock activities such as cattle raising, pigs and poultry.
Do not miss the importance of soils, here.
Ecosystems
Thanks to its geographical position and relief, Puebla presents a wide variety of ecosystems and types of vegetation, covering 5 biogeographic provinces and 7 ecoregions. The mostly represented ecosystems are:
- The forests: They are 9.4%. They have tree vegetation and can be coniferous, oak and mountain mesophiles. We can find them in a wide range of climatic conditions, from tempered semi -final areas to subhummed to very humid and also dry climates. We present the types of forests in Ecology Verde.
- The grasslands: They are 10.4%.
- The scrub: They represent 7%. It is usually found in arid and semi -arid areas, represented with shrub vegetation. Do not miss this other post about the bushes: what are, types and fauna.
- The jungle: They are 4%. They can be of the deciduous type, perennifolia and subcaducifolia, especially in areas of warm, humid, subhumid and semi -demo climate. In them we find a thorny tree vegetation, lianas and epiphytes mainly. Discover the types of jungle and their characteristics.
Of these ecosystems are obtained timber and non -timber resources such as mahogany, ceiba, opuntia, cassava and agave. Do not miss what the importance of ecosystems in this other Ecology Verde.
Water
The state of Puebla is crossed by some superficial riversone of the most important is the Necaxa River, covering 200 kilometers in length through Puebla and Veracruz, leading to the Gulf of Mexico. This river is very important for energy generation through hydroelectric plants and to a lesser extent for irrigation water.
Other rivers of importance are:
- ATOYAC.
- Cazons
- Very
- Salty.
However, underground hydrology is The most important water resource. In the low and flat areas of Puebla, underground water extraction is favored. The extractions are carried out through wells, springs, norias and filter galleries, and is mainly destined to agriculture (80%), but also to public services and home consumption (15%), the industry (3.5%) and only 1.5%to livestock activities.
Discover how we can take care of water in this post that we suggest.
Biodiversity
The great diversity of species that we find in the state of Puebla contributes to the biodiversity of Mexico, placing it among the first five megadiverse countries in the world. One of the main reasons is Great diversity of habitats There are thanks to the variety of climates and soils.
Thanks to them we find:
- Approximately 4,426 plant species.
- Exactly 1,274 of animals.
- Around 131 fungi.
- Nails 165 species of protists.
- Around 30 of bacteria.
Animal species represent 2.1% of diversity at the national level, the birds being the most represented group with 595 species, of which 55 are endemic, that is, they are only found in that region.
7.8% of the territory of Puebla is under some protection, including protected natural areas at the federal and state level. Despite this, much of these ecosystems are highly disturbed and degraded, resulting in an irreversible loss of biodiversity.
