The doctor who asks for help from a chatbot is no longer an exception: in Italy 61% of doctors now use generative artificial intelligence. And not just them: among citizens the share reached 36%, tripling in the space of a year. The downside? Only a third of specialists say they know that these systems can “hallucinate”, that is, invent plausible but wrong answers. The numbers come from the Digital Health Observatory of the Polytechnic University of Milan, according to which spending on digital health grew by 9%, reaching 2.7 billion euros.
It’s talked about in Everything Smart. Dialogues for a smart everyday lifea podcast in five episodes in which Lorenzo Baravalle questions the directors of the Polytechnic’s Digital Innovation Observatories on how digital is changing daily life. Here are the episodes.
Smart Working. With Fiorella Crespi, director of the Smart Working Observatory, we talk about agile working. After the decline in 2024, remote workers began to grow again in 2025, reaching 3,575,000. The driving force is the public administration (+11%) and large companies, where more than one employee in two works remotely. In small and medium-sized businesses, however, smart working is slowing down.
Smart Cities. Matteo Risi, director of the Smart City Observatory, explains how Municipalities are investing over a billion euros to make cities more efficient and liveable, starting with mobility and public lighting. Here too, artificial intelligence is advancing: today 7% of municipalities use it, but by the end of the year it could reach 25%.
Smart Home. With Giulio Salvadori, director of the Internet of Things Observatory, we enter the connected home, a market that reached one billion euros in 2025. 63% of Italians own at least one smart device and one in two actually uses it every day. At the top of the purchases are security systems, then connected appliances.
Smart Health. Chiara Sgarbossa, director of the Digital Health Observatory, explains how healthcare is transforming, from digital services to the arrival of generative AI in medical practices.
Smart Commerce. With Valentina Pontiggia, director of the B2c Netcomm eCommerce Observatory of the Polytechnic of Milan, we talk about how shopping is changing. By the end of the year, online purchases by Italians should exceed 66.6 billion euros, and the fastest growing sectors are insurance (+11%) and the beauty and pharmacy sector (+8%).
