The world’s largest airport is already under construction. It will be a full aerotropolis with six runways.

Saudi Arabia has joined the mega-building fever and, after announcements such as Mukaab , Epicon , Jeddah and The Line , it has just announced that a new mega-project has been approved. Its ambition is to turn the country into a nerve centre for commercial aviation.

A 57 square kilometre project and 12 square kilometres of residential areas in Riyadh

The project that has just been approved in Saudi Arabia is enough to make the world’s most ambitious architects dream. It involves the construction of a new international airport, due to open in 2030. Riyadh’s King Salman International Airport is set to become the largest in the world, dethroning King Fahd International Airport, which is also located in Saudi Arabia.

Six runways, six . This airport will have no fewer than six parallel runways, stretching over the 57 square kilometres that the project will occupy. This area will also include almost 12 square kilometres of residential and recreational zones.

This ambitious project has been entrusted to Norman Foster and will be accompanied by LEED Platinum certification, which attests to the energy efficiency of the construction. The aim of the project is to accommodate up to 120 million passengers by 2030 and up to 185 million by 2050.

A whole aerotropolis to be built by 2030

We’re not just talking about the construction of a simple airport and its runways, as can already be seen everywhere. No, here Riyadh wants to think big and innovate. That’s why, as things stand, the project incorporates this new approach, the aerotropolis concept. An aerotropolis is a metropolitan sub-region whose infrastructure, economy and land use are centred around an airport. These transport hubs are evolving in the same way as railway stations in the 19th century or ports in the 18th century.

The objective is very simple to understand. The Saudi Arabian press agency states in its official press release that the ambition is to “transform Riyadh and make it one of the 10 most economically important cities in the world”. The other objective is to support the growth of its population, estimated at between 15 and 20 million people by 2030.

    • Not true. They don’t just take you away like ICE does in America. If you have valid documents and you follow the law and work rules, you have nothing to fear. It’s much better than Europe or Australia or America where racism is rife and people beat you on the street

    • You are wrong Mr. Hiromi Yamada. If you happen to familiarize with them, you will admire their superb qualities. Their traditional, cultural and religious heritage bound by strict adhearance to tight inner family circle in their day today affairs, but that circle is getting expanded to cover outside family members inside and outside KSA.. • I’ve been working in Saudi for 11 years and this is home to me. I love this country and wish I could get citizenship!!!Yes it’s hot in summer and sandstorms are a real thing but I’ll take it any day over the crime of other countries. It’s very safe here and probably the country with the fastest growth in the world at the moment.

  2. Who the hell would want to fly through Saudi when Dubai, and Doha are right there. They have world class airlines, beautiful airports, and they are not crawling with cult police ready to arrest you and cut off your arms for tempting their women.
