How many centimeters can a girl grow after the first cycle?

By Dr. Kyle Muller

After the first menstrual cycle, a girl can still grow in height on average between 6 and 8 centimeters, but with great individual variations.

After the first menstrual cycle, one girl grows in height of 6-8 cm, but there is a great individual variation. This was discovered a large study by the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) published in the magazine Frontiers in Pediatrics.

The study. The researchers followed 793 women from childhood to adulthood. The average age of the first menstrual cycle was 13 years old, with an age interval between 8.2 and 17.2 years.

Earliness. However, they discovered that, in the face of an average growth of 8 cm, the variations were surprisingly large: from 0.2 to 31.1 centimeters. In general, if menstruation arrive at an early age, they are followed by greater growth in height and vice versa.

Reverse relationship. The beginning of menstruation before the age of 12 was followed by a median growth of almost 13 cm. For the participants in the study that had their first cycle after just over 14 years, the corresponding growth was about 3 cm. The girls with a high body mass index (relationship between weight and height) usually have an early cycle.
