With the arrival of summer and high temperatures, thousands of homes once again turn to the fan to be able to rest at night. However, many people still hesitate before leaving it on for hours for fear that electricity consumption will increase their electricity bill. The truth is that, as energy advisor and electrician Sergio Llorente explains in his video, the expense is much less than most imagine.
The expert, who regularly shares advice on electricity consumption and installations on social networks, assures that keeping a fan running all night represents a practically negligible cost. In fact, he summarizes the idea with a very clear sentence: “Keeping the fan on all night costs 2 cents, less than a bottle of water a month.”
This statement breaks one of the most widespread beliefs among consumers, especially at a time when the price of energy continues to be one of the main concerns for many families.
A consumption much lower than what most imagine
To demonstrate this, Sergio Llorente takes as a reference a moderately powerful domestic fan running for about eight hours, the approximate time a person spends sleeping.
The professional explains that, after measuring consumption with specific tools, the device registers a power close to 0.021 kilowatts during its normal operation. From that figure, calculate the total consumption for a full night.
“0.021 kilowatts for an average of eight hours of sleeping gives us 0.168,” he points out during his explanation, before transferring that data to the real economic cost.
Taking as a reference an average electricity price of 0.15 euros per kilowatt hour, the result is surprising: just about two cents per night.
This is how much you will pay if you leave the fan on every night of the month
If the same use is repeated every day of the month, the expense remains very low.
According to the energy advisor’s calculations, using the fan every night for thirty days would mean an approximate outlay of 60 cents.
Therefore, he insists that the cost is even lower than the price of many everyday products. In his own words, it is “less than a bottle of water” at the end of the month.
This information helps put the real consumption of this type of appliance into perspective, especially when compared to other higher-power appliances, such as an oven, a dryer or an air conditioner.
An economical alternative to beat the heat
Although air conditioning continues to be the most effective system for reducing the temperature of a home, it also consumes considerably more energy than a fan.
While an air conditioning unit may require several hundred or even more than a thousand watts of power depending on the model and conditions of use, a conventional fan only needs a small fraction of that energy.
This explains why many families opt for this solution during summer nights, especially when temperatures allow a pleasant thermal sensation to be maintained simply by moving the air in the room.
In addition to economic savings, the fan also represents a more energy-efficient option, as it consumes many fewer resources to provide an improvement in thermal comfort.
The fear of the bill is still present
Although fans are one of the appliances with the lowest consumption in the home, there is still some fear of leaving them running for several hours in a row.
In many cases, this concern responds to ignorance of the real consumption of these devices. Many people tend to think that any device plugged in all night will mean a significant increase in their electricity bill.
However, the calculations made by Sergio Llorente show precisely the opposite: the economic impact is practically negligible.
For this reason, the specialist sends a reassuring message to those who hesitate before turning on the fan when going to bed. “You know, turn them on without fear and sleep cool this summer,” he recommends.
The importance of knowing the consumption of each device
Energy efficiency experts remember that knowing how much each appliance actually consumes allows you to make more rational decisions and avoid giving up comfort for fear of an expense that, sometimes, is much lower than you imagine.
Not all electrical devices have the same impact on the bill. While some high-power equipment can significantly increase consumption if used for many hours, others, such as fans, only represent a few cents a day.
In this sense, having accurate information helps to better plan the use of electricity and identify where it is really worth applying savings measures.
During the summer months, maintaining an adequate temperature in the bedroom can promote rest and reduce problems derived from excess heat. If this comfort only costs a few cents a day, the fan is consolidated as one of the most economical alternatives to cope with the hottest nights.
The figures presented by Sergio Llorente show that, far from becoming a significant expense, leaving the fan running while sleeping has a minimal impact on the electricity bill. In many homes, that peace of mind can translate into cooler nights without having to worry about a significant increase in your electricity bill.
