The 4R of recycling

The 4R of recycling

By Dr. Kyle Muller

There are many times that we have spoken in Ecologiaverde of the 3 basic “erres” to adopt as a day to day to lead an ecological life. It consists of managing our objects and waste thinking about the well -being of the planet. If we all adopt this lifestyle – which is achieved with a minimum effort and wraps multiple practical advantages – the amount of garbage that currently contaminates the planet would be considerably reduced.

This proposal of the “3R” began from the Greenpace Association and suggests minimizing waste production to try to change the great ecological problems of today’s society. A, to reduce (not buy in large quantities, try to be responsible with what we acquire). R of reuse (instead of getting rid of those clothes or objects that we no longer need, to give them a new use that prevents them from ending up in the trash and, thus, also avoid acquiring new products) and R of recycling, (one of the basic premises in ecology, separating waste by material correctly and allocating them to valid recycling points so that they can be used again). Now many people talk about The 4R of recyclingone more that is added to the 3 pre -existing. In the following article of Ecologiaverde we will explain what the measures of the 4R consist of and how we can put it into practice.

What are the 4 Erres of Recycling

Now, in recent years, environmentalists adopt a new “r”: recover. It is about using the raw material for the creation of other objects. We can apply this rule, for example, promoting the purchase of objects created with recycled materials. This “R” is also related to “repurchar”, or helping this industry so that this practice grows and becomes much more common. Next, we will explain guidelines to start recovering and repurchase much more efficiently.

Many people talk about a Fifth “R”: rethink. That is, completely change our way of reflecting on life and always put the environment ahead in each purchase or expenditure option that we are going to do to be truly committed to ecology.

Reducing

It is the most obvious, but also the most important. It is not about buying and spending without looking and then recycling everything, responsible behavior also begins before consumption.

How many things have we bought in our life that we have not needed or which we have not given good use? Millions of people live on the planet and many of them have more things than they truly need. This applies, for example, to clothing, books, food, which many times, we go on a date and end up throwing. It is easy to mentalize ourselves to avoid buying in excess, with practices as easy as:

  • Books, Music cds, Movies, games and similar: We do not have to do without them at all, but to find ecological alternatives such as renting them in libraries and playbins, finding associations where they are exchanged, and so on. Why do we want to store books that we are not going to read once we have finished them?
  • Electronic devices: It is not necessary to change mobile or computer every year to be up to date. Try to give them responsible use and take care of them not to have to buy them very often.
  • Clothes: Combining style clothes, creating our own dresses from others that no longer serve us, choosing good quality clothes that are not going to break immediately and acquiring garments in second -hand stores we will reduce the damage that this sector produces to the environment.
  • Meal: Do not buy more than you need. Plan in advance the menu of the week to reduce expenses and avoid throwing food. Cultivate yourself/to some fruits and vegetables. Make sure you are going to consume perishable food before they spoil. Likewise, you can try not to consume precooked food to minimize the use of containers.

You can also put into practice things like going to Always buy with your own fabric bagtry to generate less garbage and clean the house or clean yourself with products that are not toxic, always looking for more natural consumption.

In addition to being responsible during the purchase process, we must also try to use less resources, such as water (save as much as possible, do not waste it and install water savers in the head of the shower), energy (do not abuse the electric light, do not leave plug -in devices and choose efficient appliances) or gasoline (do not use the car for everything, you can replace urban transport by the bike Share automobile for long trips).

The 4R of recycling - reducing

Recovering

Fortunately, there are more and more companies and proposals that use recycled materials or make use of some such as plastic to create new objects. An example of this was exposed in a past article in the blog, the bicycle pictures made from plastic.

Buying in these types of companies (there are many available online, although it is preferable that you persons in the store to reduce transportation expenses), you are promoting the preparation practice from recycled material.

Recovering is based on using a residue to produce a new one, trying to make the treatment as harmful as possible with the environment. You can also build objects yourself, for your own use or give them to your relatives. There is no more personal gift than something done for yourself!

The 4R of recycling - recovering

Reusing

We recover all those objects or appliances that no longer serve us and what do we do with them? Before recycling them (not all materials can be recycled), we can think of give them a second use. For example, donating the clothes that we no longer want or reconvirting it in something else (some jeans in a bag or in a slope, recover the colored fabrics to make a tablecloth, glass bottles in vases …). In addition, we can start using objects that are rechargeable or reusable, such as lighters, batteries, bottles that we can recharge with liquids instead of acquiring a container at each time.

Many devices can be repaired. Take them to a specialized store before acquiring a new one. With soda cans, for example, we can create many new objects that will serve us on a day -to -day basis.

You can also reduce the consumption of new products in second -hand stores near your neighborhood and often buying in them (of clothing, appliances, technological devices …)

Other practices are reduce the use of paper. For example, scarves (or diapers) buy them on cloth instead of paper and wash them instead of discarding them. Likewise, it occurs with paper vessels and plastics for a party. If you use folios, buy them with recycled paper and use them on both sides. New technologies also give us the opportunity to reduce the use of paper.

In summary, this “R” proposes to try to make the life of the acquired product as long as possible and get away from the practice of buying disposable products.

The 4R of recycling - reuse

Recycling

Now, when we have already been responsible with our purchase and we have reused everything we could, we must not put aside the Important recycling practicenot yet present in all homes and businesses. Recycling is very important and its effects feel a lot on the planet. If you still don’t, it’s time to start. You will see how you feel good helping the environment and it is very practical on a day -to -day basis (although you have more “garbage” to get, once we learn how to compact everything well, you will have to get them out of home much less often. In the end, only the organic will bother you, which is the one that smells, but the rest of the waste can be stored for months in a corner until you meet a large number of them). Recycling is a process that does not cost effort and to which It is simple to get used to itbecoming part of everyday life, just like sweeping the floor or washing your teeth.
