Types of garbage

Types of garbage

By Dr. Kyle Muller

Our activity constantly generates garbage: let’s develop the activity we develop, there is always a generation of waste behind it that should be treated in the most appropriate way to avoid causing greater damage to the environment, both preventing waste from being sources of pollution and reintroducing the materials in the market to reduce the extractive activity of new materials.

If you want to meet What types of garbage are there According to different classification criteria, this article continues to read because in ecology, we explain everything to you.

Types of garbage depending on whether you can recycle

This is the first classification that we are going to see, since it is the most important in the framework of a growing circular economy. As we have already seen in other posts, what we know as garbage can actually be raw materials if they are well treated. However, for this the garbage has to be recyclable. Thus, we can classify garbage types as recyclable and non -recyclable:

Recyclable garbage

It is the type of garbage that can be recycled, to give it a longer shelf life. For this, a series of conditions have to be met:

  • That is recyclable: there are elements that are very difficult to recycle, or that need a “new” raw material contribution. For example, color plastic (usually in bottles of cleaning products) is very difficult to recycle due to the dyes it incorporates.
  • That is available: for example, space garbage is impossible to recycle simply because it is far. The same goes for many plastics that are at the bottom of large water rafts.
  • That has an acceptable degree of purity: so that the garbage can recycle the materials have to be well separated. For example, both PET plastic and metal can be recycled, but if we find metal traces with the PET recycled sheets will not serve. Another example: organic garbage mixed with plastics or other impurities results in a very poor quality compost that cannot be used in agriculture.
  • That recycling facilities are available: a material is not only recyclable depending on anything, but according to where it is. Unfortunately, many of the waste treatment systems fail to recycle everything that could.

Non -recyclable garbage

If the above conditions are not met, we are facing non -recyclable garbage. In this case, its deposition is usually resorted to the incineration in large landfills (incinerated or without incinerate). In the worst case, it will pass to the environment.

Types of garbage according to its composition

Most garbage has some degree of mixing. However, to study its composition we will assume that all materials are pure and this is how garbage types are classified according to their composition: Organic garbage and inorganic garbage (Metals, paper and cardboard, waste of works or debris and plastics and containers).

  • Organic garbage: It is garbage with a high organic matter content. Usually, which is generated with food processing (food remains, vegetable peels, etc.).
  • Metals: Metals are usually generated in the industry, but also, for example, with electronic and technological garbage.
  • Paper and cardboard: They are generated regularly, since many products are protected with paper and/or cardboard. Here you can consult how to recycle paper.
  • Construction and demolition residues: These residues are generated when small -scale works are done. For example, they are the brick fragments that we generate when demolishing a wall, but also the land that is removed when a new building is built.
  • Plastics and containers: Very common in homes, since our current distribution system uses plastics a lot. In these other links you will find which plastics can be recycled and which not and how plastic is recycled.

Types of garbage according to your toxicity

When we think of waste, normally, what we generate in our homes comes to mind. However, human activity generates a large amount of waste in factories, quarries, etc., which are very different from what we can find in a usual home. This is the Classification of garbage types according to their toxicity:

Non -toxic waste

Non -toxic waste is the majority. They are residues that do not cause significant damage to people’s health and that, in addition, has not been found with studies that produce environmental damage.

Toxic waste

They are residues that do an harmful action in the health of people and/or in the environment. For example, paintings, sludge, remains of chemicals (including agrochemicals), solvents, oils and other industrial spills … All these waste is very difficult to recycle, and must be treated with great care so as not to cause major damage.

To distinguish toxic waste from non -toxic we recommend consulting the European waste list (commonly called “Ler codes”). Toxic waste is those that on this list have an asterisk.

Types of garbage containers

The Types of garbage containers They depend largely on the local garbage management. However, here we leave the most common:

  • Blue container: paper and cardboard.
  • Green container: glass.
  • Yellow container: containers and plastics.
  • Brown container: organic.
  • Gray container: Other remains.

In this other ecology article, we deepen the subject of what are the types of recycling containers, detailing their color and all the types of garbage that go in them.

Other types of garbage or waste

Then we leave you Other types of waste They are less known, but they are also very important:

Electronic and technological waste

It is the garbage that is generated from electronic devices. It is very coveted for its high value metal content.

Space garbage

It is the garbage that is generated from the satellites and other space units that become out of use. Many stay orbit around the earth and are totally unusable.

Health waste

These are considered as hazardous waste. Although they are mostly organic, they are considered to have a high content of bacteria and other potentially infectious agents, in addition to a high load of medications, so their only output is incineration. They are mainly generated in health centers and research centers.
