France and fauna

By Dr. Kyle Muller

France with all of its territories, continental and overseas, is present in Europe, Africa, America and Oceania and in 3 oceans: Atlantic, Pacific and Indian. This makes the French Republic the most extensive country in Europe and the second country regarding the extension of its maritime area. Can you imagine the immense plurality of species that houses in its territory? Good! To do this, in this ecology article we will summarize the most outstanding species of France and fauna. We will also mention those animal species that are in danger of extinction. We invite you to continue reading.

Characteristics of France’s flora and fauna

He Metropolitan French territorythat is, the one who is in Western Europepresents 5 climates:

  • Mediterranean climate: Present in the south of the country and in Corsica, it is characterized by very hot summers and cold and humid winters.
  • Semi -antinental climate: It is found in the east of the country and is characterized by the shortage of rainfall and the great annual thermal amplitude.
  • Oceanic climate: It is located on the west coast, it is a region with hot summers and fresh winters, a very humid climate.
  • Mountain climate: It is located in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the central massif, the swearing and in the center of Corsica. It is characterized by very hard winters and very stormy summers.
  • Degraded climate: This type of climate is a subcategory of the oceanic climate from which it differs with a small continental touch. It is between the center of France and the upper part of France, which of course includes the Paris basin. The degraded climate is characterized by hot and rainy summers and very hard winters.

Meanwhile, the particularities of the French territory are the habitat of a great diversity of species and, as a result, the French metropolitan territory is considered as a Hotspot or hot biodiversity pointwhich means that there is a high concentration of both plant and animal species.

On the other hand, France has numerous territories out of what is continental Europe, distributed in different geographical areas such as Antarctica, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. All these territories are included under the name of France of overseas. Most of these surfaces are insular and in them there is a high rate of endemic species. Therefore, there are several French overseas regions that are considered Hotspots and, added to the one we named in the previous paragraph, France presents a total of 5 hot biodiversity points throughout the extension of its territory.

Flora of France

As we learned in the previous section, France has a huge diversity of species. So much so that the metropolitan territory presents around 40% of the species of flora that are in Europe. To learn more about the flora of France, then we will describe the most emblematic species of the French metropolitan territory.

Orchid

The orchid species known as Ophrys Drumana It is native to Metropolitan France (located in Western Europe), specifically from the Mediterranean region. It prefers areas with an altitude greater than 200 meters. Like all orchids, it presents a flower with a peculiar appearance, and is purple. We encourage you to discover more types of orchid reading this post.

Fauna of France

As for France’s fauna, the diversity of animal species is greater than plant biodiversity, mainly if we consider the animal species that are in overseas territories. Therefore, in this section we will develop the most representative fauna species not only of continental France, but also of overseas France.

Marquesas Dรบcula

This kind of bird (Ducula Galeata) It is endemic to one of the islands that are part of French Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. It is a large dove, which can reach a weight similar to 1 kilogram. Its preferably habitat is forests with heights above 200 meters.

Balearic toad

The Balearic Sapo (Balearicus buffotes) It is endemic to the Corsica Island, which is included in Metropolitan France. Its appearance is characterized by the contrast of its green warts on a clear background. This kind of toads is threatened by the strong degradation that its habitat has suffered.

Polecat

THE TURร“N (Mustela Puctorius) It is a carnivorous mammal that is found in the French metropolitan territory and is widely distributed by Europe, Asia and Africa. His long and flexible body allows him to move quickly through the undergrowth and enter the burrows of his prey: rabbits and other rodents.

Sarasรญn Giant Gecko

Sarasรญn’s giant gecko (Correlophus sarasinorum) is an endemic reptile of the New Caledonia archipelago, which is located in the South Pacific Ocean and belongs to the French overseas territory. It is a night species and, unlike other geckos, it is not arboric habits.
