When it’s hot, everyone makes this mistake to cool off, yet science proves it’s ineffective.

By Luke Toones

When you’re dying of heat, it seems perfectly logical to rush to a source of very cold water. So we load up our glasses with ice cubes and take ice showers… but is this a good idea? Scientific studies on the subject seem to suggest quite the opposite.

First wrong idea: drinking ice cold to cool down

In the middle of a heatwave, you immediately want to fill a tall glass with ice-cold water to instantly relieve the thermal discomfort. Sorry to say, but this method isn’t nearly as effective as it sounds. It’s true that the sensation of coolness is an illusion for a brief moment (which is why everyone continues to drink glasses of water that are too cold), but physiological reality always catches up with us in the end.

When very cold water reaches the stomach, it causes a thermal shock. The brain receives a signal that the body’s internal temperature has suddenly dropped. In response, the body stops trying to cool you down, among other things by suddenly putting the brakes on sweating, the most important natural process to help us dissipate heat. It’s very important to understand that it’s not the temperature of the liquid consumed that permanently reduces body heat, but rather the evaporation of the sweat produced by the body.

Even more seriously, drinking too cold can cause serious digestive problems. By suddenly cooling the stomach, the surrounding blood vessels contract, slowing down digestion and increasing the risk of abdominal cramps. Far from actually cooling itself, the body actually uses up precious energy trying to warm the chilled stomach. Not only will your stomach hurt, but you’ll feel even hotter.

Scientists recommend drinking water at room temperature instead. Slightly cool water is no problem and, more surprisingly, drinking a hot drink is actually quite beneficial. Many people living in deserts and dry climates do just that. Warmth increases perspiration, so you feel cooler in the medium to long term.

Ice showers: beware of thermal shock

Another common mistake is to take an ice-cold shower as soon as the temperature rises. As with the glass of ice water, this classic solution for hot weather is highly questionable from a scientific point of view. The cold shower may give you an immediate feeling of relief, but the real benefit is very limited, if not counter-productive.

By suddenly exposing a warm body to cold water, a physiological reflex known as thermal shock occurs. Blood vessels close to the skin suddenly contract, drastically reducing superficial blood circulation. Instead of evacuating the heat accumulated in the body, it remains trapped around the internal organs, leading paradoxically to a conservation of body heat.

This thermal shock can also cause more worrying problems, particularly in people with an underlying heart condition. The heart is suddenly forced to pump blood against increased resistance, raising blood pressure and suddenly accelerating the heart rate. In extreme cases, the body can even trigger a heart attack or stroke, although these cases remain relatively rare.

The best option, according to the researchers, would be to opt for lukewarm showers. Slightly cool water is enough to gradually lower body temperature, without provoking the sudden reflex of heat retention.

Fans and other false allies

Another common misconception: the fan as a miracle cure for the heat. This summer classic, proudly installed next to the bed or desk, is not always a reliable ally. In very hot and dry environments, the fan speeds up the evaporation of sweat, which can increase the risk of rapid dehydration. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as soon as the temperature rises above 40°C, the fan completely loses its protective effectiveness against both heat (because it heats us up more) and heat-related illnesses.

The real solutions according to science

If popular methods have all these limitations, then what can you do to really cool down effectively? According to a number of scientific studies, simply immersing your feet or hands in cool water is a sensible and safe strategy, effectively reducing core body temperature without causing a dangerous shock.

Similarly, drinking regularly and abundantly, favouring slightly cool or lukewarm beverages, remains the key. As we’ve said, contrary to popular belief, drinking a hot beverage can be more effective over time, as it stimulates sweating, the body’s natural heat-removal mechanism.

Finally, another long-term preventive approach is to change your environment. In cities, which are veritable “heat islands”, the integration of green spaces such as green roofs or plant walls is an effective method, capable of significantly lowering the ambient temperature without resorting to energy-hungry air conditioning.
