World Oceans Day: when is it and why is it celebrated?

By Dr. Kyle Muller

Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are home to immense biodiversity that supports life on our planet. Despite their importance, the oceans face increasing threats due to human activity: pollution, overfishing, climate change and habitat loss. For this reason, World Oceans Day is commemorated every June 8, a key date to reflect and act in favor of marine protection. If you want to learn more about when World Oceans Day is and why it is celebrated, keep reading this Evidence Network article.

When is World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day is celebrated every June 8. This date was officially recognized by the United Nations Assembly in 2008, although the idea was proposed much earlier, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Since then, it has become a global day of awareness and mobilization.

Each year, World Oceans Day revolves around a central theme that invites reflection and action. The theme for 2025 is “Ocean Wonders: Sustaining What Sustains Us.” In previous editions, topics have included: “Awakening new depths”, “Ocean planet: the currents are changing” or “Revitalization: collective action for the oceans”. These campaigns seek to highlight the challenges facing marine ecosystems and encourage sustainable solutions.

Why World Oceans Day is celebrated

Celebrating World Oceans Day has multiple objectives. First, it recognizes the vital importance of the oceans to life on Earth. The oceans produce at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe, regulate the climate and act as large carbon sinks. In addition, they are a source of food, employment and culture for millions of people around the world.

However, the current state of the oceans is worrying. Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the sea, seriously affecting fish, birds and marine mammals. Ocean acidification, caused by excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, is weakening coral reefs and other forms of marine life. As if that were not enough, overfishing and habitat destruction are bringing many species to the brink of extinction.

For these reasons, World Oceans Day becomes an opportunity to educate, raise awareness and promote a change in attitude towards the responsible use of marine resources. It is also a day to ask governments for stronger conservation policies and to highlight the role of science in protecting the marine environment.

How to celebrate World Oceans Day

There are many ways to join in the commemoration of this day, both individually and collectively.

  • Participate in local or virtual events: beach cleanups, talks, workshops and environmental education campaigns are organized every year in different parts of the world. Many organizations also conduct online activities, such as virtual seminars and exhibitions.
  • Reduce your plastic footprint: One of the most effective ways to care for the oceans is to reduce the use of single-use plastics. Bringing your own water bottle, refusing straws, using reusable bags, and buying in bulk are small changes that make a big difference.
  • Consume fish responsibly: supporting sustainable fishing is essential. Avoid overexploited species, choose products with organic certificates and consume seafood in moderation and conscience.
  • Educate yourself and share: educating yourself about the problems facing the oceans and sharing that information on social networks or with your loved ones can have a multiplier effect. The more you know, the more people can join the change.
  • Support environmental initiatives: you can donate or collaborate as a volunteer in organizations that work for marine conservation. Your time or financial contribution can be key to protecting vulnerable habitats and species.
